"My Greatest Enemy"

Last week, due to unforeseen circumstances, I ended up having a one-on-one class with one of my CrossFit Kids. I love these opportunities to spend some time with kids individually, and they enjoy getting to choose what skills or strength to work on.

After working on pull up progressions for a while, I asked B (age 12), what he would want to work on next. He thought for a moment, sighed, and said, in the tone of Frodo agreeing to take The One Ring to Mordor, "I guess I'll work on my greatest enemy: jump rope."

And so, we embarked on a journey toward smoother jump rope technique! We laughed and had fun, and though he is still very new to jump rope as a skill, he showed quite a lot of improvement, and progress toward conquering that great enemy.

He finished that day's class by choosing another great enemy to conquer: being upside down and doing wall walks.

Call them "greatest enemies," goats, challenges, or something inappropriate, improvement comes from facing these skills with determination, a sense of humor, and a certain amount of courage.

Take a page from B's book, and work on conquering those enemies when you can, and over time your relationship to these skills will improve, too, from enemies, to frenemies, to even maybe, just possibly, friends.
